On our way back from Steamboat’s 30th Balloon Rodeo festivities, Steve and I stopped by Mt. Evans for an afternoon of scouting and photographing the sheep amongst the rocks and tourists.

Steamboat Barn in Beautiful Sunset Light

Well, almost alpenglow….

Driving back from dinner tonight, we had gorgeous setting sunlight. So we decided to swing by the infamous Steamboat Barn to see how the light was playing on the icon.

Sure enough, we had 10 minutes at most of this beautiful setting sunlight we call Alpenglow — made famous by the late great Galen Rowell.

I think I’ve shot this barn every trip here to Steamboat since about 1996. Love the barn, location and tonight… loved the lighting on it. It’s an American Icon. One look at this barn, and you know it’s Steamboat….

A Pasque in Black and White

I was out shooting the Pasque wildflowers a couple weekends ago and had a fairly good overcast morning of it. Pasque’s are like the wild version of a Tulip, and only about a quarter of the size. These flowers have something in them that, when ingested, makes the heart rate of the animal slow way down, so most animals avoid them. (Don’t know what they do to humans though.) But it turns out that wild turkeys are immune to the Pasque’s influences, so they dine on them like a dessert buffet. In fact while photographing them that morning we could here a couple turkeys gobbling just over the knoll from where we were shooting. I was hoping and being really still, just hoping they would wander over to us….

These flowers are a light purple, almost lavender in color and grow to be about 5 to 6 inches high. When they open, they’re beautifully colored inside with yellow and white stamen. And the inside of the lavender petals are white. Beautiful.

Spotlight from Heaven

As I was driving to Clear Creek Canyon this morning to photograph the Pasque wildflower blooms, I topped out over a hill and had this magnificent view of the Flatirons and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) building. The overcast skies opened up and this huge beam shown down on the Flatirons. Simply Beautiful.

It was going to be a good day….
